The Code
Synopsis
The project ‘The Code’ explores human visual perception by examining colour blindness. Colour shapes how we learn, interpret information, and create symbolism to understand the world. However, colour blindness—formally known as colour vision deficiency (CVD)—disrupts the conventional visual order, requiring those affected to adopt an alternative, personal "code" for perceiving colours.
While each individual with CVD experiences colours differently, a standardised system called ColourADD enables them to distinguish colours through a structured code. ColourADD consists of symbols—arrows and squares of varying sizes and orientations—each representing a specific colour. By experimenting with this system to reconstruct images, The Code not only highlights the complexities and challenges of codifying colour and vision but also raises broader questions about the relationship between structured visual languages and human perception particularly in the context of the increase in machine-to-machine image-based communication and AI-generated imagery.
The order of these images was on purpose. I started with the objects slowly leading up to nature. Going from meaningless objects to human nature. The objects being covered while the more nature oriented images show less cover which can give different meanings and perception to each viewer.

3 Days and 3 Hours

3 Days and 3 Hours shows off the colours. Keeping on theme for colour blindness, the rubik's cube has 6 colours and is widely known. I chose this to show off the basic different colours which is what the code is used for. While also allowing the code to do its job and create a simple template for the colour.

12 Days and 8 Hours

This image did take over 12 days to create due to its detail. Every little window, bush and fire escape is included in the image, also making it so most detailed and controlled image of my series. A man made building turning into a digital made image, an interesting comparison. One took physical labour and is now abandoned in London and the other was me behind a screen manually placing each box to be viewed online and in 2D. It also has extremely simple colours making it still clear to someone who is colour blind due to its natural grey, white and black colours.

4 Days and 6 Hours

The image could dispute an idea of A.I vs Nature. A.I is consuming nature just as the world is being taken over by technology. Ending with A.I winning. A pure beautiful flower being constructed into a black and white pixelated image takes away all its qualities and strips humanity away. This could be distressing or could simply be the world progressing.

2 Days and 4 Hours

This is the start of leaving some colour in the image. The dogs fur becomes grey in the shade however the dog itself isn't grey, so I decided to leave it out. This is when colour could be viewed differently and challenged. Some would have simply filled in the entire dog and made it grey however I feel like skin tones we are not grey due to a shadow we are still our skin colour. A shadow does not determine our own personal colour. A dog a living animal can be viewed the same as a person in its fur colour.

3 Days and 5 Hours

This image (similar to 2 Days and 4 Hours) has an end result that looks incomplete. This is done on purpose. The colourADD code does not include skin colour tones. It ignores skin colour completely despite it being such a huge topic. The image challenges that and can offer many views and perspectives when viewed. It is considered the strongest piece of this project so far.

2 Days

2 Days was NOT in the gallery space. I ended up choosing 5 images. I didn't feel this images was as high quality as the others and was used as my first experimental piece. It wasn't as powerful as the flower image and I wanted to round out the images as much as I could. This was also my first experimental piece for the code on a natural living thing.

8 Hours

This image also was NOT in the gallery space. This is my first attempt of using the code on a human. The image is strong in as it takes away complete identity as she faces away however, it is clear of a first attempt as it lacks detaiI. It also was my first realisation that skin colour was not in the code. Colour scheme wise for the code it worked. Hair colour was tricky as blonde can become many different varieties under light so was important I chose the right code colour .
